Week 9 Story "The Rock King"

A long long time ago in a land far far away there was a kingdom in the middle of the great sea. This kingdom was an island and on that island, there was the Mountain of Flowers and fruits. This land was holy and plentiful, it was sacred land. At the very top of the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits, there was a high rock that stood taller than all of the rest.

This rock was mystical due to the power it heald. It would take in energy from all of the life surrounding it and store it within its core. One day when the rock became so packed full of energy that it burst. Out of that burst, an egg made of stone was made. After days of curious attentiveness, the egg made of stone finally hatched, and out of it came Dwane "The Rock" Johnson.

Dwane learned to walk and talk like any other animal on The Mountain of Flowers and Fruits but he was different. He was special due to his massive size and extremely vascular muscles. When all of the other creatures around him were in a situation where they needed extra strength to accomplish a task they would always call upon The Rock.

One day Dwane and his friends were walking along a path when they came upon an enormous waterfall. The waterfall raged so hard that if someone were to go under it they would get torn apart by the rage of the water. One of The Rock's companions said to the group, "Surly nobody could pass through that waterfall and survive. If someone can do it then we should declare them our king!" Dwane "The Rock" Johnson saw this as a golden opportunity to prove his ultimate strength.

Dwane said "I will pass through the waterfall and make it back alive." His peers stood back in awe and watched The Rock as he went through with this treacherous act. He began to walk through the raging water, and at once he vanished behind the curtain of the falls. His friends watched in despair as they thought he had for sure been ripped to shreds from by the water. But as soon as he vanished, he came right back out, unscathed.

His friends were amazed and they all greeted him as he emerged. They asked how he did it and the only reply he gave back was a wink and a peck flex. They immediately appointed him as king of the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits and they all lived in harmony from then on.

Bibliography: This story is part of The Monkey King unit. Story source: "The Ape Sun Wu Kung" in The Chinese Fairy Book, ed. by R. Wilhelm and translated by Frederick H. Martens (1921).

Authors Note: This story is an adaptation of the Monkey King story but instead of the main character being a monkey made of stone, i replaced him with Dwane "The Rock" Johnson.

  1. Hi Ryan! I actually laughed when I read this story! So creative! I am not really familiar with the original story, but I appreciate that you made the monkey Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson! One thing that I would suggest is to make your Author’s note a little bit longer and more detailed. Since I am not familiar with the original story, it was a little hard to compare your story with the original. But other than that, I loved it! Great job!

  2. Hey Ryan!
I definitely enjoyed this story a lot. I also laughed when I read your authors note about how you changed the monkey in the Dwayne Johnson. It seemed to be so fitting that since his nickname is “The Rock” that he is made of rock. Adding the wink and the peck flex was a nice touch since he is known for that in real life. I could easily visualize what was happening in your story and I think that is from how well you write. Keep up the great work!

  3. Hey Ryan!

This is such a fun story adaptation! I like how you have transformed Dwayne Johnson's nickname into a physical manifestation of rock. The idea that he was born for the core of a majestic mountain is very cool. The peck flex in response to his friends' surprise at the end is a great, cheeky moment.

    A few editing notes:
-The first instance where you introduce the mountain, "fruits" is not capitalized
-In the phrase "power it heald," heald should be held

  4. Hi Ryan! What a fun and interesting story! I had to read the story after seeing Dwayne Johnson's picture on the story, but I had no idea that he would be incorporated in the story as you included it. I would suggest also to make the Author's note longer so the reader could have a better understanding of the original story. Great story!

The Coyote and the Snake Reading Notes

The Coyote and the Snake One day the coyote was walking along the trail when he heard a voice say Stop! The coyote looked around and he couldn't see anything. He disregarded the warning and kept moving. Once again he heard someone yell stop. He looked around again and he saw nothing until he heard a voice say "Walk over me, or move out of the way." The coyote looked down and found a snake in the path right below him. The snake said that he has been traveling this trail for years and he would simply not move. The coyote said the same thing and that he would simply not move. The coyote said he would have to keep going if the snake moved or not. The snake made the threat that if the coyote stepped over him the snake would have no choice but to kill him. The coyote didn't believe him and called his bluff. He walked over him and the snake bit the coyote. The coyote didn't feel anything and then mocked the snake. The coyote kept walking on and when he got to the...

Story Week 13 "Alice's Fall"

Alice looking down the hole Alice followed the rabbit until she came to a hole. She saw the rabbit jump down the hole and contemplated going after him or not. She looked back at her sister reading on the hillside and thought to herself, "There is no way I am going back to be that bored." So she got down on her hands and knees and peered into the rabbit hole to see what she could find.  The hole was very dark so she squinted to see if she could see a clearer picture. She still couldn't see anything so she leaned in to see if that would clear up her vision. Once she started to lean the ground started to crumble out from under her. She started to push back to leave the hole but the ground just started to crumble more. Her hands slipped out from under her and she fell into the hole.  Alice let out a piercing scream, then another, then another. She was frantically yelling due to the fear that she would splat on the ground. She just kept screaming and falling unt...
