Week 2 Story "Noah's Airship"

Bibliography: Noah's Ark is the story of how God asked a man named Noah to build an ark because he planned on flooding the earth. On this ark was Noah, his family, and a pair of every animal in existence. Link

Authors Note: I took the story of Noah's Ark and adapted it to a story of the future and God ridding the world of Technology.

The year is 56,994 and the world is consumed with technology. People don't interact face to face any longer. The last time people had a need to conversate face to face was in the late 36th century. There was a movie released many many years ago that closely represents the state of the population today, I think it was called Wall-E.

My name is Noah and I am one of the last of the unplugged. The unplugged is a group of individuals who would just rather not divulge in the technology of today's world. We are often accused of being a secret cult with plans to overthrow technology but we simply just enjoy life better without it. I live far from any populated area as I find it best not to be near the consuming hubs of tech. The unplugged and I have little contact, we prefer to write letters to one another. I sent out my last letter three months ago and haven't received a response.

Technology has come to be like a drug and once someone gets a taste they become addicted to using it for every task. I assume the others have fallen to temptation and joined the masses. I choose to live a life separated from the evil that has consumed the rest of the world, and that's why I believe he called on me.

Weeks ago while I was watching the sunrise over one of the last unpopulated hillsides something peculiar happened. As the first beam of sunlight peaked over the horizon it didn't grow into the form of a sphere, like every other day. This light was different, purer as if the pollution in the atmosphere didn't affect its hue. That is when the voice of God spoke to me and gave me a mission to save humanity and rid it from satans grasp. He told me of ancient times when he had made a promise never to flood the earth due to man's shortcomings. He commanded me to build a ship that rides on air so when he sends forth storms upon the earth I along with my passengers could soar above.

So, for the past three months, I've been building my ship. My ship operates like a bird, gliding on the air rather than using jet engines. Slowly but surely my passengers that the lord warned me about started showing up at my doorstep. These passengers were creatures that I had only ever heard of before in books. Dogs, Cats, Lizards, Lions, all of these creatures looked like they had made a long journey from wherever they came, and I knew they were relying on me. They also came in pairs of two as well, one male and one female. This gave me hope for the land that might survive after the storm

This airship was nearly done, and it couldn't be done any sooner. My house looked out over the hills, and just past the hills was the ocean. On the furthest spot my eye could see, tucked away against the back of the horizon I saw clouds filled with thunder booming towards. I could tell that our time was limited. So I put my faith in God, finished the ship, loaded up the passengers, and prepared for a long rough ride.

  1. Woah, this was a crazy story to read! I really enjoyed it. You told the story in a somewhat haunting manner, which made for an engaging experience. "I am one of the last of the unplugged" was a standout line to me. Technology definitely has its drawbacks in the real world, and there are certainly a lot of people who could never go "unplugged"! This was a creative, fun way to retell the classic flood narrative, nicely done.

  2. Hey, Ryan! I love your take on Noah’s Ark being a giant airship in place of a boat—very cool. I’m a fan of all things fantasy and sci-fi, so this was fun to read! It reminds me of dystopian stories where the chosen one is tasked to save what’s left of humanity or the world, so on and so forth. I would suggest looking over your writing two or three times before submitting your story to avoid any errors (this can easily be revised in your blog). I /literally/ have to read aloud to myself to see if I made any writing errors, plus it helps to see how the story sounds to the reader. It may be dull at times, so alternatively you can have a friend look over your work or use a text-to-speech program. Overall, I think you have great potential and I’m excited to read your other stories in Mythology and Folklore!

  3. Hi Ryan!
I am a huge fan of this retelling! It follows the original story of Noah's Ark while also being different enough to stand out as a different story. Mentioning the movie Wall-E helped set the scene of the story well since it is one that almost everyone has seen, and your descriptions of the characters and events taking place kept the story intriguing. I was also happy to read that animals were still alive on this futuristic, technology-ruled planet! As was mentioned above, double checking your future posts will help with avoiding grammar errors and making the story more cohesive, but other than that this story was fantastic!

Reading Notes Part B "Deaths Messengers"

Deaths Messengers One day a giant was walking along a highway when a man jumped out at him and told him to stop. The man said, "I am death, you have to listen to me." The giant denied him and told death to move out of the way. They disagreed and began to wrestle. It was a long and tough battle but the giant gained the upper hand. He defeated death and left him on the side of the road. Death laid on the road concerned with what the world would look like without him. He was concerned for the people who wouldn't die in his absence. The world would be full of people and nobody would be able to move. Then a young man walked up out of nowhere and started to assist death without knowing who he was. He let death drink from his canteen and he nursed him back to health. Death finally was able to speak to him when he said," I am death and I am extremely grateful for your help. Because of this, I promise to not kill you without warning. When your time comes I will send ...

"Why the Bat Flies By Night" Reading Notes

The Bush Rat Bibliography: This story is part of the Nigeria unit. Story source: Folk Stories From Southern Nigeria by Elphinstone Dayrell (1910). One day the Bush Rat and the Bat and the bat were feeding together. They always fed together, just like they did everything else together. But, one day the bat decided to turn on the Bush Rat. They were both eating soup when the Bush Rat asked the Bat why his soup was always so good. The bat usually prepared his soup beforehand and just took some extra care while making it, but he decided to tell a lie. The bat told the Rat that before he starts cooking the soup he boils himself in the broth. The Bat said that his flesh is so sweet that it flavors the broth. The Rat was convinced that that is how the soup was so good so later that night he went home and told his wife that he would make soup for the family that night. He started making the soup and as soon as his wife turned away he jumped into the pot of boiling water to "fl...
